SPSS Student Version: Price, Trial Length and Free Alternatives

Today, the "SPSS student version" means a GradPack: a full copy of IBM SPSS Statistics on a 6- or 12-month student licence, sold by IBM-authorized resellers at academic prices rather than by IBM directly. In October 2026 a six-month Base GradPack cost between about $38 and $70 depending on the reseller. IBM's free trial lasts 14 days, and many universities provide SPSS to their students at no cost.

Below: what each GradPack edition contains, current prices with sources, how the trial works and what to do when it ends. Prices were checked on resellers' and IBM's sites on 5 October 2026 and change often. This guide is written by the team behind TRTT, a free tool mentioned at the end.

What "student version" means today

IBM's product page describes two academic routes. The first is "affordable, single-user licenses for students and faculty, available at special academic pricing through trusted IBM-authorized vendors". Those are the GradPacks (resellers spell it Grad Pack or GradPack). The second is campus editions, licences bought by the university that cover teaching and non-commercial research across the institution.

A GradPack isn't a cut-down program. It's SPSS Statistics with a time-limited licence and a fixed set of modules, depending on the edition you buy. It installs on Windows or macOS like any other copy. One reseller lists two activations, one per computer. The licences are for educational use on your personal computer, and you'll need to prove you're a current student.

GradPack editions: what's in each

SPSS is split into modules, and the edition decides which ones you get. According to Hearne, a reseller, the v32 GradPacks contain:

Edition Modules
Base Statistics Base, Data Preparation, Bootstrapping
Standard Everything in Base, plus Advanced Statistics, Regression, Custom Tables
Premium Everything in Standard, plus Categories, Forecasting, Missing Values, Decision Trees, Neural Networks, Complex Samples, Conjoint, Exact Tests, Direct Marketing

Base covers the core of most introductory courses: frequencies, descriptives, crosstabs, t tests, one-way ANOVA, correlation and linear regression. Before buying Base, check your syllabus for anything beyond that. For example, binary and multinomial logistic regression are part of IBM's Regression module, which Base doesn't include. If your thesis needs logistic regression, general linear models beyond the basics or custom tables, you need Standard at least.

The free trial

IBM offers a free trial from the SPSS Statistics product page. According to IBM's support documentation, the trial licence is valid for 14 days. After that you can buy a subscription, or contact an IBM representative, who "may" be able to extend the trial.

Things worth knowing before you start:

If your trial has already ended in the middle of an assignment, our guide to what to do when an SPSS trial expires goes through the options.

Grad Pack vs your university's licence

Before you buy anything, check what your university already pays for. Many institutions hold a campus licence and let enrolled students install SPSS on their own computers for free. Others provide it in computer labs or through a virtual desktop you can log into from home. Florida State University's myFSUVLab and the University of Alabama at Birmingham's UAB Anywhere are two examples of virtual desktops that include SPSS.

A quick way to find out: search for "SPSS" plus your university's name, or look on your IT department's software page. If SPSS is required for a course, ask the instructor; someone has usually arranged access. A virtual desktop also solves the problem of owning a Chromebook, an iPad or a Linux laptop, on which SPSS can't be installed. More in is SPSS free for students?.

Free alternatives

If your course lets you choose your software, or you only need SPSS for a few analyses, a free program may be enough:

On iPhone and iPad, TRTT is an app that's free for data sets up to 100 cases, with an optional Pro upgrade for larger files (prices are shown in the app).

How to choose: if your instructor marks SPSS output or teaches SPSS syntax, use your university licence, the trial or a GradPack. If you just need correct results from a .sav file, a free tool is enough. See SPSS alternatives for a broader comparison and SPSS alternative online for browser options.

FAQ

Is there a free student version of SPSS?

Not permanently. IBM's free trial lasts 14 days. After that, students either use their university's licence, which is often free to them, or buy a GradPack from an authorized reseller.

How much is the SPSS student version?

On 5 October 2026, a six-month Base GradPack for SPSS Statistics 32 cost $37.90 at OnTheHub and $69.95 at ThinkEdu; 12-month Standard licences were $83.05 and $139.95. Prices vary by reseller and country.

Which GradPack do I need: Base, Standard or Premium?

Base covers descriptive statistics, crosstabs, t tests, ANOVA, correlation and linear regression. Choose Standard if you need logistic regression, advanced general linear models or custom tables, and Premium for modules such as forecasting, decision trees, complex samples or missing-value analysis.

Can I extend the SPSS free trial?

IBM's support page says an extension may be possible if you contact an IBM representative. According to an IBM Community answer, a new trial becomes available 365 days after the last one.

Does the GradPack work on a Chromebook or iPad?

No. GradPacks install on Windows or macOS only. On a Chromebook or iPad, use your university's virtual desktop or a tool designed for that device; see SPSS for iPad.
